Free Crochet Pattern: Mug Hug, the Mug Cozy

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

What crocheter never made a mug cozy? This is an often recommended project for beginners as it is a small and easy one to accomplish. Here is my version, adorned with faux fur because I tried this yarn for Christmas and totally fell in love! However, you could make this pattern without faux fur: below are some instructions for both types of borders.

Une main tient une tasse couverte d'un couvre-tasse en laine

This pattern is offered for free here on the blog or as a Ravelry download.

Level: easy

Also available in French

Gauge

8 hdc x 6 rs = 2"

What you'll need

10 g of worsted weight yarn. Use some of your scraps!

3 g of super bulky weight faux fur yarn. I used We Crochet's Fable Fur

4,5 mm/size 7 crochet hook

A 1" button

Abbreviations

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

r(s) = row(s)

sc = single crochet

sk = skip

sl st = slip stitch

st = stitch

Notes

The mug cozy's final size is 27 cm long (not including the button strip). It is somewhat stretchy and will fit bigger mugs.

On row 28, the ch 12 creates a strip which will cling around the button to hold the mug cozy in place.

Work fur rows loosely.

Stitches on the longer sides are worked in row ends.

The wrong side of your fur border will be the right side of your project.

The Pattern

R 1: with worsted weight yarn, ch 10.

Rs 2-27: 1 hdc in second ch from hook and in each st across, ch 1 and turn. (9)

R 28: hdc in next 4 sts, ch 12, sk 1 and hdc in next 4 sts.

R 29: join fur to the base of the strip (in 6th st), ch 1, [sk 1, sc in next] all around until you get to the other side of the strip, sl st and cut thread.

No fur option

R 29: with a contrasting color, join worsted weight yarn to the base of the strip, ch 1, *sc in each st across up to next corner, ch 1 and turn corner**, repeat from * up to the other side of the strip, sl st and cut thread.

Weave in ends.

Sew the button in the middle of row 2 on the wrong side of your piece.
